Architecture

The two nodes communicate via UDP heartbeat packets with each other. These heartbeat packets are exchanged every 10 seconds and make sure that only one server is active at a time, while the other server is on standby. Both servers share one or multiple IP addresses with each other, but only the active server has these assigned IP addresses enabled on its interface, while the standby server automatically disables the shared IP addresses.
