Alerting

nevisAdmin alerts the users by four methods:

  • An error event is created. This event is shown in the web front-end of nevisAdmin. The event remains until the problem has been solved (e.g., a service becomes available again) or a user deletes the event manually. Events about reached thresholds always have to be deleted manually by an operator.
  • An audit and an error message are written to the log facility of nevisAdmin, see the chapter Troubleshooting.
  • An email (SMTP) is sent to the operators responsible for a service / server (optional).
  • An SNMP trap is sent to another monitoring system (optional).

SMTP events (email) are only sent once until the event messages have been deleted within nevisAdmin's web front-end, while SNMP The Nevis MIB documenting the SNMP events may be downloaded at AdNovum's Customer Zone, (traps) are sent repeatedly (every two minutes as long as the error persists). The nevisAdmin property ch.nevis.nevisadmin.smtp.sender defines the sender's email address (which is used to determine which nevisAdmin instance has sent the mail).

The necessary settings to forward SMTP or SNMP messages are done within the notification settings, see the chapter Notification settings.
