Requirements

A failover cluster has the following requirements:

  • Ethernet interfaces: The shared IP addresses are configured automatically as subinterfaces by the nevisAgent on the active server. Make sure you don't configure any subinterfaces on the chosen Ethernet interface manually.

You must also configure one primary IP address for each server which is enabled at all times and used for administrative purposes (communication between nevisAdmin and the nevisAgent installed on that server), for the heartbeat packet exchange and for all traffic between nevisProxy and internal servers (application servers, nevisAuth, etc.). Please make sure you have added all necessary static routes for this interface to ensure communication to nevisAdmin as well as all the application servers, while the nevisAgent will automatically configure the default route. See also the figure: Example network setup, in the chapter Architecture, for a possible configuration scenario.

  • nevisAppliance: The failover cluster functionality is available for the nevisAppliance platform. On other Linux distributions (RHEL/SLES), the installation of the sendarp utility is required (available within the iputils package).

  • IPv4 network: The two servers must share IPv4 IP addresses within the same L3 network.

  • Per environment: All servers hosting a nevisProxy instance must be used by the same environment only.
